1. Literal Meaning:

Bhagavat (भगवत्) means “divine”, “of the Bhagavān (God)”, or “belonging to God.”

Bhagwat is the vernacular (e.g., Hindi) form of the same term.

Thus, Bhagwat generally denotes “that which pertains to Bhagavān,” especially in reference to Lord Vishnu or Lord Krishna in devotional contexts.


2. Common Usages:

a) Bhagavata Purana (Shrimad Bhagavatam):

One of the eighteen major Purāṇas in Hinduism, commonly referred to as the Bhagwat Purana or simply Bhagwat.

It narrates the life, deeds, and teachings of Lord Krishna, emphasizing the path of bhakti (devotion).

मुक्तिमोक्षप्रदाते एतद् द्वयम्॥


b) Bhagwat Dharma:

A devotional spiritual path centered on surrender to and love for Bhagavān, especially in the Vaishnava tradition.

It highlights the core values of devotion, surrender, and divine love.


c) Bhagwat Katha:

A religious storytelling event involving the recitation and explanation of the Bhagavata Purana.

It is a popular spiritual practice in many regions of India, fostering communal devotion and reflection.


3. Philosophical Connotation:

The term Bhagwat carries a deep spiritual resonance, signifying anything that is sacred, divinely inspired, or aligned with spiritual truth and devotion.

In essence, it denotes a connection to divine knowledge and the path of devotion (bhakti).

It emphasizes God-realization, devotion, and the soul’s relationship with the divine.

In Hindi:-

भगवत्" (संस्कृत: भगवत्) शब्द का अर्थ है:

"भगवान् से संबंधित", "ईश्वरतुल्य", या "भगवान् का"।

यह एक विशेषण (adjective) है जो "भगवान्" (भगवत् + मतुप् प्रत्यय) से बना है।

व्युत्पत्ति (शब्द की बनावट):

भगवत् = भगवन् (भगवान) + -त् (मतुप् प्रत्यय)

"भगवन्" शब्द "भग" धातु से बना है, जिसका अर्थ है ऐश्वर्य, धर्म, यश, श्री, ज्ञान, वैराग्य आदि गुणों का पूर्ण रूप।
